The peak of Whernside, standing at 2,415ft, lies on the county boundary with Cumbria. It is the highest peak in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, and by extension the highest peak of the Yorkshire Three Peak Challenge.

In shape, Whernside forms a long ridge, running roughly north-north-east to south-south-west and most commonly ascented from Ribblehead. On a clear day, the views from the summit towards the Lake District are spectacular, including (with the aid of binoculars) Blackpool Tower, some 40 miles away.
